Yeah, we’re trying to hold back the snickering too. It seems the IEEE has chosen now as the time to start looking over those (previously innocent) battery protocols, and the timing couldn’t be any more convenient. Rather than buckling down and getting a finalized 802.11n standard out the door, the task force is being silently forced to take a good, hard look at battery criteria. Currently focused on IEEE P1825 — the designation for lithium-ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries used in digital cameras and camcorders — the crew is hoping to set more uniform regulations for the “design, production, and evaluation” of said cells. The update is supposedly aimed at revising “design analysis, testing and qualification checks” to ensure those QA reports filter out any, um, potentially explosive misfits, and while the project is scheduled to be completed “within 18 months,” we know how quickly these folks let their deadlines slip. But the force isn’t letting those increasingly-concerned computer manufactures get too much of a head start, as the IEEE 1625 is also slated for a (very necessary) revamp — which makes perfect sense considering its label: “laptop battery standard.”

I don’t know if this will address any of Dave’s .Mac woes, but Apple is showcasing the next version of the .Mac webmail service. .Mac’s webmail has been stuck in 2002 for about 4 years now, so an update will be very nice.
The overall UI has been refined, and it looks like Apple is going for a more ‘application’ like feel using ‘the latest web technology.’ Drag and drop, message preview, and keyboard shortcuts will be supported. Apple hasn’t said when this will see the light of day but it is ‘Coming Soon.’

We told you it wasn’t too far off from release this morning when we showed you our hands-on shots of the device, and now Sony has made good on our promise by finally giving us a price and launch date for their Sony Reader PRS-500. Sony is bringing this one in “on or before” October 31st for $350, and is currently accepting pre-orders at their online store. It sure took them long enough, but we’re glad they didn’t slip on that $350 pricepoint. As for specs — in case you haven’t managed to pick them up by now — the E Ink unit sports a 6-inch display with 170 pixels per inch of 4-level grayscale action. There’s also 7,500 page turns of battery life, and while we’re not quite sure we’re ready to get locked into Sony’s latest proprietary DRM in the form of BBeB, we’re sure we can find plenty of use for unit between the other document formats supported and the repeated self-congratulating viewings of our own RSS feeds.
